My Galaxy's (1.9 TDi Zetec (w)2000) engine developed a major fault yesterday, horrible clunking noise and loss of power. Local garage reckons its lost compression on No 4 cylinder (but doesnt knw why as its unusual on a galaxy) and it needs major engine rebuild or replacement engine but said he doesnt think its worth it as looking at over

He may well be right - but the description is a bit generic - It would help if we knew exactly what the fault is.

Hi there

First thing to do would be take cylinder head of inspect the damage, may just be a bent valve but you may have camshaft and/or piston/bore damage :(

Couldn't just throw it away without having a look first

Take the cam cover off first - it may be a badly worn camshaft. If you're really lucky it may be just a collapsed tappet. Edited by tim-spam

Hopefully its just the head take the sump off and look at crank to check though

Its not a bad as you would think if its the head on the 1.9 is interchangeable with lots of other diesel'

This deals dosnt look so bad i guess if you looked at other 1.9 head's fitting engine code ANU which am guessing is yours.

I would always look to fix an engine. This is not a major job for a garage with all the right equipment. I would do an exhaust test first in the water to see if the head gasket has gone. Even doing a big or small end is not a major problem. If it is a new head rebuild you are probbaly looking at
